Having just returned from a family beach holiday with kids and dog included, I started thinking about the art of packing lightly and having all you need for a fun time at the beach.
Even though these holidays were a little more planned and catering for a self contained unit and my family's needs, planning for a perfect beach holiday with or without kids involves the art of travelling lightly and keeping swimwear and beach outfits & accessories super versatile.
Why is packing lightly important?
When embarking on a beach holiday, the last thing you want is to be weighed down by an excessive amount of luggage (especially when you want to do a little shopping while you're away!). Whether jumping on an international flight or travelling with a packed car boot, the art of travelling light not only allows you to move with ease and grace, but it also ensures that you can effortlessly transition from the beach to a glamorous evening outing.
Here are my top tips and tricks for packing lightly and making sure you have all you need for your own comfort and style at a beach destination, so you can fully embrace the sun, sand and sea:
1. Plan your outfits with precision
Before you even think about reaching for your suitcase, take a moment to plan your outfits. Consider the activities you have in mind and the number of days you'll be away. I usually lay out out my clothes in piles on my bed ie. tops, bottoms, swimsuits etc to see how much I need to take. Always think about the "mix and match" concept of versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. Not only does this save on space but also allows you to effortlessly transition from a day of lounging by the water to a sunset cocktail by the sea.
And remember, less is more when it comes to beach chic.
2. Pack more than one swimsuit
Even though you're trying to minimise doubling up on similar items to travel light, a number of different swimsuits ie. from two piece to one piece choices, will enable you to layer on tops and dresses to create new beach outfits. Having a number of different swim suits also ensures you're not creating a noticeable tan line - so mix it up and enjoy!
3. Choose lightweight fabrics that work with your swimsuits
When it comes to beach fashion, opt for lightweight fabrics that effortlessly drape over your sun-kissed skin. Linen and cotton are all excellent choices that exude elegance and comfort and best of all they are breathable for hot summer holidays. As dresses and layering options go, an oversized maxi dress or equally, cover ups and beach kimonos are ideal choices for layering with your swimsuit and best of all these are ideal to transition from beach to bar.
4. Accessorise with a statement necklace
No beach ensemble is complete without the perfect accessories. However, when packing lightly, it's essential to choose your accessories wisely. A wide-brimmed hat (I prefer a panama or even an akubra hat for my beach look) not only protects you from the sun but also adds a touch of glamour. 5. Minimise your beauty regime
